How to Select and Replace a New Conveyor Belt

Conveyor belt is critical component in many industrial, agricultural and logistics operations. Whether handling bulk materials, managing production lines or ensuring smooth workflow in warehouses, the efficiency of a conveyor system largely depends on the quality and condition of its conveyor belt. This article will help you in selecting and replacing conveyor belt to ensure optimal performance.

The Role of Conveyor Belt

Conveyor belt is not just a tool for moving materials—it is essential element for streamlining operations. Their applications across various industries include:

  • Efficient Material Transporting: From small items in packaging plants to heavy loads in mining operations, conveyor belt handles diverse tasks.
  • Boosting Productivity: Automated material handling reduces labor effort and accelerates processes.
  • Minimizing Downtime: Well-maintained conveyor belt can significantly reduce operational interruptions caused by failures.

Signs of Your Conveyor Belt Needs Replacement

Recognizing when to replace a new conveyor belt can save you downtime. Look out for these warning signs:

  • Excessive Wear and Tear: Cracks, edge fraying and thinning are clear signs of aging.
  • Slipping or Misalignment: Frequent slipping or belt misalignment indicates a replacement may be necessary.
  • Decline in Performance: Slower transport speeds or reduced load capacity signal potential issues.
  • Frequent Repairs: If maintenance costs keep increasing, replacing the belt may be more economical.

How to Choose the Right Conveyor Belt

Selecting a replacement conveyor belt requires careful consideration to ensure compatibility and efficiency:

  • Material Types: Choose the belt material based on its application. Common materials include:
    • Rubber: Durable and suitable for heavy-duty tasks.
    • PVC: Lightweight, ideal for food processing or packaging.
    • Metal: Designed for high-temperature or abrasive environments.
    • PU: Oil resistant, durable and meets FDA standard, it is preferred for food industry.
    • Foam: Durable, light weight and water absorption. It is good for delicate items or packages.
    • Silicone: Heat resistant, non-sticky, widely used for hygiene industry.

Conveyor Belt Material

  • Belt Width and Length: Ensure the replacement belt matches your conveyor system’s dimensions.
  • Load Capacity: Choose a belt capable of handling the weight and type of materials being transported.
  • Environmental Conditions: Consider factors like temperature, humidity, and chemical exposure.
  • Industry Standards: Look for belts that meet specific certifications, such as FDA approval for food-grade applications.

Steps for Replacing a Conveyor Belt

  • Procure Replacement Parts
Before replacing a belt, ensure the new belt’s size, type and material match the original one. Opt for high-quality parts from reputable manufacturers to guarantee longevity and reliability.
  • Prepare Tools
Gather essential tools such as wrenches, pliers, jacks and bolt cutters. Verify that all tools are in good condition to avoid accidents during the replacement process.
  • Remove the Old Belt
    • Power off the equipment to ensure safety.
    • Detach all attachments and connections from the belt.
    • Loosen the belt tension and carefully remove the old belt. Mark alignment points for reference during the installation of the new belt.
  • Install the New Belt
    • Position the new belt in the installation area, ensuring proper alignment.
    • Reattach all attachments and connections according to the alignment marks. Adjust the tension appropriately.
  • Inspect and Test
    • Check the belt’s tension and alignment to ensure no twisting or misalignment.
    • Perform a short trial run to confirm smooth operation and address any issues.

Common Replacement Methods

First, we can use segmented connection replacement. This method involves connecting the new conveyor belt to the old belt in sections and then gradually replacing the entire old belt. The specific operation is usually carried out in the head or tail position ofmachine, first disconnect a part of the old belt, connect one end of the new belt with the old belt and then gradually lay the new belt on the conveyor by pulling the other end of the old belt, until the whole old belt is replaced by the new belt.

Segmented Connection Replacement of Conveyor Belt

Another method is that the head is sent into the new belt and the head is sent out of the old belt. This method requires a simple support frame to be set up in front of the conveyor head for recycling the old belt. First disconnect the old conveyor belt and then install a traction device on the head. Then one end of the new belt is connected to the old belt, and the other end of the old belt is connected to the traction device. The old belt is pulled by a traction device, while the new belt is laid onto the conveyor and the old belt is pulled out. Finally, connect the joint of the new belt to complete the replacement process.

Head-to-Tail Method of Conveyor Belt

Both methods effectively ensure smooth conveyor operation. The choice of method depends on site conditions and operational convenience.

Maintaining Conveyor Belts

Proper maintenance can extend the lifespan of conveyor belts and improve overall system efficiency. Here are some tips:

  • Regular Cleaning: Remove debris and buildup to prevent wear and slipping.
  • Lubrication: Keep rollers and other moving parts well-lubricated.
  • Monitor Tension: Avoid overtightening, as it can lead to premature wear.
  • Scheduled Inspections: Identify and resolve minor issues to prevent escalation.
